The surreal approach starts from a simple belief: loyalty should feel like a strange, beautiful story, not a minor accounting event. Instead of adding more features to the same points engine, we change the medium - from pure transaction into experience, narrative and playful absurdity.
I. WHY "NORMAL" LOYALTY CAN’T BE FIXED WITH MORE FEATURES
Many brands believe they can rescue loyalty by bolting on more layers: better apps, more partners, more personalized emails, more gamification widgets. But if the core is still: “earn points, redeem points, repeat” all added complexity becomes decorative noise.
The surreal approach does not try to “enhance” the existing machine. It treats the machine as raw material to be melted, rearranged and reimagined.
LO-FI, NOT OVER-ENGINEERED
The goal is not to build the most complex loyalty platform in the world. The goal is to build things that:
- feel human, strange, and oddly specific,
- can be explained in one sentence over a drink,
- look simple from the outside, even if the wiring is clever.
We take emerging technologies - AI, selective blockchain, simple game mechanics - and use them as pigments, not as the painting itself.
II. INGREDIENTS OF THE SURREAL APPROACH
When we say we “blend emerging technologies with absurd experiences”, we mean very specific combinations that are always in service of emotion, not hype.
1. GAMIFICATION AS NARRATIVE, NOT JUST POINTS 2.0
We borrow from games not to turn life into a grind, but to give guests a sense of **role, progress and mystery**.
- Roles & Classes: You’re not just “Gold”. You’re a Night Owl, Mountain Whisperer, or Silent Observer.
- Quests: Instead of “stay 5 nights, get X points”, you get “leave a message for your future self” or “start a Drink Chain”.
- Achievements: “Chain Master”, “Void Believer”, “Proof of Chill” - titles that sound like they belong in a surreal RPG, not a CRM export.
The point of gamification here is not to extract more behaviour. It’s to make loyalty feel like a small, ongoing story about who you are when you travel.
2. AI AS CO-AUTHOR, NOT SURVEILLANT
AI in the surreal approach is not there to stalk you and sell you more upgrades. It is there to:
- turn your stay into a one-of-a-kind artwork (AI Souvenir Generator),
- compose a short dream brief based on your sleep pattern,
- whisper a poetic notification instead of another discount code.
We treat AI like an introverted artist in the back room - not a loud sales assistant on the front line.
3. BLOCKCHAIN AS RITUAL, NOT BUZZWORD
We use blockchain only where its properties add **ritual and weight**:
- irreversibility for burning points into The Void,
- traceable chains of kindness in Drink Chain Protocol,
- ownership of strange digital mementos (e.g. a one-time “Golden Towel” that self-burns after use).
If the chain doesn’t deepen the story or ritual, we don’t use it. No NFT spam. No “Web3 for the sake of Web3”.
III. DESIGN PRINCIPLES: HOW WE THINK ABOUT CONCEPTS
Every LOYAL.WTF experiment is filtered through a small set of principles. They are intentionally simple:
1. IT MUST BE TELLABLE AS A STORY
If a guest cannot describe it in one sentence to a friend, it probably doesn’t deserve to exist.
- “I bought a drink for the next stranger who checks in.”
- “I left a message for my future self in this hotel, and it will wait there until I come back.”
- “I burned all my points for nothing and it felt… weirdly right.”
A feature that only makes sense in a product manual is not surreal. It’s just corporate.
2. IT MUST BE SLIGHTLY UNCOMFORTABLE (IN A GOOD WAY)
Surreal loyalty should feel like a glitch in reality:
- a reward that isn’t just for you,
- a perk that breaks normal expectations (silence instead of more noise),
- a mechanic that forces you to confront what “value” actually means.
If everyone immediately nods and says “yes, that’s safe”, it’s probably not surreal enough.
3. IT MUST BE BUILDABLE AT LO-FI SCALE
We are not designing for fantasy-land. Each concept should have a **lo-fi version** that a small hotel, brand or team could test in a few weeks:
- Drink Chain without blockchain - just a little ledger and a bartender.
- Time Capsule with a simple database and box behind reception.
- AI Souvenir as a one-page web form + a simple generative model.
Surrealism is not an excuse to never ship. It is a lens that guides what we ship first.
IV. EXAMPLES OF THE SURREAL APPROACH IN PRACTICE
DRINK CHAIN PROTOCOL
Classic approach: “Use your points to get a free drink.”
Surreal approach: “Use your points to buy a drink for whoever checks in after you. You will never meet them.”
Same underlying cost. Completely different emotional payload.
AI SOUVENIR GENERATOR
Classic approach: “Here is your invoice and 374 points.”
Surreal approach: “Give us three words that describe your stay. We’ll give you a unique piece of surreal art that only exists because you were here this week.”
Points are abstract. An artwork is a memory.
THE VOID PROTOCOL
Classic approach: “Always make sure the guest feels they maximized value.”
Surreal approach: “Give the guest a button that lets them burn everything for nothing. And a wall where their name lives afterwards.”
On a P&L sheet, this is irrational. On the internet, this is a story people will screenshot.
V. SURPRISE AS A DESIGN OBLIGATION
The surreal approach treats surprise not as a “nice to have”, but as a design obligation.
If a guest can predict exactly:
- what they will earn,
- what they will redeem,
- how they will feel,
then the system is stable - but not alive.
Surreal loyalty thrives on controlled unpredictability:
- a Mystery Box that is sometimes trivial and sometimes profound,
- a Quest that starts like a game and ends like a confession,
- a Drink Chain that reaches a guest who really needed that tiny act of kindness today.
VI. HOW THIS FITS INTO LOYAL.WTF AS A LAB
LOYAL.WTF is where we test these surreal combinations in theory and, gradually, in small live pilots.
- We write, sketch and prototype at lo-fi level.
- We talk to hoteliers, product teams and weirdos who want to try one small experiment in their property or product.
- We catalogue what works emotionally, not just financially.
Today, that makes us a concept lab:
- We share ideas openly.
- We build small, strange MVPs.
- We look for patterns that can later become system design principles.
In the future, the surreal approach will be our **official design language** when we:
- help brands reimagine their loyalty from “earn/burn” into “experience/narrative”,
- co-create pilots like Drink Chain, AI Souvenir or Proof of Chill with brave partners,
- turn LOYAL.WTF from a pure lab into a reference point for “post-boring loyalty” worldwide.
The first hotel groups, digital products or ecosystems to embrace this way of thinking won’t just “optimize retention”. They will become the case studies everyone else copies in 3-5 years.
